BTEC CONSTRUCTION

Transition BTEC Level 2 First Certificate in Construction and the built environment is a vocational (work related) course involving practical and theory based work. You will learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. As well as learning about the employment area you are interested in, you will develop the skills you need to start and/or further develop your education and career.

Admission Requirements

A minimum of three GCSEs including English, Maths and Science, and at least a grade 3 and above in either English or Maths. All students will sit an initial assessment. BTEC CONSTRUCTION LEVEL 2 CERTIFICATE

Semester 1

Construction Technology: CONS200This course will examine the different forms of construction that can be used for low-rise (up to 5.2 metres in height) offices, retail units and homes. Learners will acquire an understanding of the performance and construction of low-rise structures both above and below ground.

Exploring Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction: CONS201In this unit you will understand the importance of ensuring good standards of health and safety and will become familiar with the main parts of the health and safety management system. Learners will develop knowledge and understanding of health, safety and welfare in the construction industry and will be given an opportunity to perform and use risk assessments.

Performing Plumbing Operations: CONS202This unit will give you the opportunity to explore the different tools and equipment used for plumbing operations and to learn how they are used to cut and bend pipework and fasten fittings together. The safe use of tools and equipment is essential as plumbing often takes place within tight and enclosed spaces. Learners will gain knowledge of the working techniques used to perform plumbing operations and will familiarise themselves with the relevant tools and equipment. They will apply techniques to develop practical skills in undertaking plumbing tasks.

Performing Electrical Operations: CONS203This unit will give learners the basic skills needed to carry out the safe installation of electrical circuits for power and lighting using current industry-standard techniques. In this unit you will investigate some of the activities that are completed during electrical installations. You will also look at health and safety related to working with electricity.

Communication for Tertiary Purposes – GED 102This foundational communication course is designed to introduce students to the communication process, channel and associated theories. It enables them to interpret and analyse verbal and non-verbal cues to critically evaluate various forms of communication in personal, professional, and societal contexts. In addition, it will help students improve their critical thinking and academic writing skills necessary for becoming effective communicators in business organisations.

College Readiness GED 101This course introduces students to basics of tertiary education in preparation for their transition from secondary school to an institution of higher learning. They are expected to complete various modules in time management, critical listening, group working and academic writing.

Construction Drawing Techniques: CONS204Add a Tooltip Text

Exploring Carpentry and Joinery: CONS205Learners will understand the use of tools, materials and equipment used in carpentry and joinery and will develop skills in preparing, cutting and joining wood. This unit will introduce you to the tools, materials and personal protective equipment (PPE) used by carpenters and joiners. You will learn about the potential health and safety hazards in a carpentry and joinery work area, how to carry out a risk assessment, and what is safe working practice in the use of common tools and equipment. You will also develop the knowledge, skills and techniques to determine and select appropriate materials to produce a timber frame to a given specification.

Performing Blockwork Operations: CONS206Learners will understand safe working practice when developing skills in the use of tools, materials and equipment to safely complete demanding blockwork tasks. In this unit you will build on the skills and knowledge gained from Unit 11: Exploring Trowel Operations and learn more about building walls using blocks. This unit will offer you the opportunity to explore some of the health and safety practices that apply to blockwork activities, and to explore the common bonding arrangements for raising corners and junctions using concrete blocks, including the processes and techniques used in their construction. You will also have the opportunity to use simple calculations to establish the correct dimensions of walling when setting out masonry structures.

Semester 3

Unit 4: Construction and Design CONS207Learners will understand the underlying principles of building design to produce initial designs that meet the needs of a client. On completing this unit, you will understand what the construction industry undertakes in terms of the different types of buildings and structures it designs and builds. You will learn how client briefs can be developed by analysing the client’s needs and requirements for the building and considering the external constraints on development.

Semester 1

Construction Technology: CONS300In this unit, you will examine various forms of low-rise construction and consider the most appropriate forms for differing site conditions and client requirements. You will gain an understanding of the different types of foundation that could be used on a project and the factors that influence its selection. You will investigate superstructure, external works design and construction, considering the most appropriate specifications and details for given scenarios.

Construction Design: CONS301In this unit, you will learn the principles and practice involved in the design and construction of low- and medium-rise buildings and structures, and gain an understanding of how design is influenced by client requirements and external constraints. You will consider the stages involved in the design and construction process and gain an understanding of the use of design techniques, including sketching and computer-aided design (CAD) to provide efficient methods of designing, constructing and maintaining structures over their life cycle.

Management of a Construction Project: CONS302In this unit, you will examine the techniques needed to manage a project from start to completion. You will learn about the roles and responsibilities of the construction management team, which will include planning, forecasting, organising, buying, motivating and cost control. You will carry out planning and production control techniques and apply these skills to the design of building programmes.

Construction Science: CONS303In this unit, you will develop the skills needed to solve a variety of practical construction problems by applying knowledge of materials and scientific principles. You will learn about the science that underpins the manufacture, properties and degradation of construction materials. You will apply mathematical principles and techniques to carry out calculations that determine how materials behave under the action of forces or loads when used as structural members, and draw conclusions regarding whether a material is fit for purpose.

Graphical Detailing: CONS304In this unit, you will develop an understanding of the range of media, equipment and techniques required to produce drawings manually, and you will learn about CAD techniques and requirements. Learners develop knowledge and apply skills to produce graphical information by manual and computer-aided design (CAD) methods.

Measurement Techniques in Construction: CONS305In this unit, you will examine the processes of taking off quantities for the production of tender and contract documentation that are used for the financial control of a client’s project. You will learn how employers and client organisations use agreed methods of measurement for construction and civil engineering work. These standard methods set out clearly the rules for measuring quantities from the drawings and schedules created by architects and other members of the design team. You will use these methods to produce quantities for structural elements and then undertake the production of a document that can be used when producing a tender, and for financial control of the project.

Semester 3

Provision of Primary Services in Buildings: CONS306In this unit, you will learn the principles and practices that underpin the design and installation of hot and cold water systems, above-ground and below-ground drainage, single-phase electrical systems and gas installations. You will examine the specification of building services systems in terms of the materials used, the appropriate dimensions, capacities and falls, and any health and safety issues. You will gain an understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of the different systems available to justify the selection of the systems used.

Work Experience: CONS307In this unit, you will learn about the benefits of work experience in construction. You will examine how work experience can help you to develop personal and professional skills, such as communication and teamwork, and it will help you to understand more about the expectations of different professional roles. You will develop a plan to support your learning when on a work experience placement and you will monitor your progress through a reflective journal. This is a practical unit that will support your work experience placement in construction and give you a foundation to develop, apply and reflect on knowledge and skills in a realistic situation.
Surveying in Construction: CONS308In this unit, you will become familiar with basic surveying techniques, carry out surveying tasks and present fieldwork data in a suitable format. You will consider the nature of survey measurements, the instruments used and the errors inherent in the measurement systems, including the best ways to reduce or eliminate them. Learners develop the skills to carry out linear, levelling and land surveys, understanding the methods and technologies needed for this work.

Exploring Plastering and Dry Lining Operations: CONS206Learners will gain knowledge of the working techniques used to perform plastering and dry lining operations and will familiarise themselves with the relevant tools and equipment. They will apply techniques to develop practical skills in undertaking plastering and dry lining tasks.

Tendering and Estimating CONS206Learners will understand the underlying principles of tendering and estimating and develop skills to produce estimates. Tendering and estimating is an important aspect of construction. Estimators have to accurately calculate the cost of construction projects – these could be new-build projects, maintenance projects, refurbishment work, extensions, or alterations and renovations. The calculated cost is presented in the form of a tender. In this unit, you will learn about the different types of documentation and information that the estimator has to use to complete the estimate and some of the techniques used to calculate the cost of construction work. You will also learn how the estimate is converted into a tender, taking into account market forces and other factors, and how this makes estimating an exciting and competitive area of construction.

BTEC CONSTRUCTION LEVEL 3 DIPLOMA IN CIVIL ENGINEERING

Semester 1
Unit 6: Construction Mathematics: CONS309This unit explores the rules for manipulating formulae and equations, calculating lengths, areas and volumes, determining trigonometric and geometric properties, and applying graphical and statistical techniques. Learners will develop an understanding of a variety of mathematical methods and techniques relevant to construction and in the solving of practical construction problems.

Unit 23: Construction in Civil Engineering: CONS310In this unit, you will gain an understanding of the substructures and earthworks associated with civil engineering. You will learn how water is contained and controlled, and how the excavation of earth can form cuttings, trenches and deep excavations. The pouring of concrete and the formation of bridges, walls, foundations and other civil engineering structures is covered in terms of the plant and equipment used in construction. You will consider the building of superstructures and retaining walls in terms of the different structural frames and the methods used to retain earth at different levels.

Safe Working Practice: CONS311In this unit, you will examine the importance of planning to promote effective safe working practice. You will also examine the procedures used to control hazards and risks for construction operations across a range of activities. You will design a safe system of work that could be instigated and maintained in a typical on-site construction context.

Site Engineering for Construction: CONS312In this unit, you will use a range of surveying equipment to set out construction work, including string lines, pegs and total stations. to ensure that the completed structure meets the designer’s specification in terms of appearance and accurate positioning.
