Nursing Assistant Certificate Programme
The Nursing Assistant Certificate Programme is an 18 month long programme geared towards preparing persons interested in a career in nursing and its related fields. Learners will be exposed to theory, principles and practices of basic nursing to allow them to integrate ethical principles, legal and professional accountability standards and responsibility in the delivery of high-quality and evidence-based nursing care in multiple settings (hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, private homes, organizations, communities etc.) to individuals of all ages.
Throughout the course of study, learners will acquire confidence to administer care so that, upon completion, they can progress from directly supervised performance of duties to independent practitioners within the scope of their practice.
This Programme is a forerunner to a Bachelor of Science Degree in General Nursing.
Admission Requirements
Applicants must meet the following requirements to be eligible for admission to the programme.
1. Be at least 18 years.
2. Possess at least three (3) CSEC subjects at the CXC General Proficiency Level including English Language, Mathematics, and a Science (Biology, Human and Social Biology, Integrated Science) are preferable; OR passes in the aforementioned subjects at the General Certificate Examination (GCE) ordinary level OR the approved equivalent from a recognized Examination Board.
3. Undergo a full medical examination to identify potential barriers to successful completion of programme. Applicants must also present their immunization record or demonstrate evidence that they have been immunized against appropriate communicable diseases.

• Mature applicants (over the age of 25) in possession of prior work experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Admission is on a competitive basis and qualified applicants will be required to attend a selection interview.

Semester 1
Nursing Fundamentals (A) Needs Based Care NURS002This course serves as a prerequisite for Nursing Fundamentals B and focuses on the fundamental understanding of human needs including nutritional, physical, psychological, safety and security, and love and belonging. Students will explore how unmet needs manifest in clinical signs and symptoms including behaviour manifestations. Additionally, students will gain understanding of how individual needs differ based on cultural considerationsl.
College Readiness GED 101This course introduces students to basics of tertiary education in preparation for their transition from secondary school to an institution of higher learning. They are expected to complete various modules in time management, critical listening, group working and academic writing.
Communication for Tertiary Purposes GED 102This foundational communication course is designed to introduce students to the communication process, channel and associated theories. It enables them to interpret and analyse verbal and non-verbal cues to critically evaluate various forms of communication in personal, professional, and societal contexts. In addition, it will help students improve their critical thinking and academic writing skills necessary for becoming effective communicators in business organisations.
Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology FNUR001This foundational course introduces the learner to basic knowledge of healthy human anatomy and physiology at the various stages of the life cycle. Through the course, learners can relate structure to function, to enable better understanding of the human body.
Communication for Nursing FNUR002This course acknowledges the importance of effective communication in the workplace and in daily life and service. Nursing assistants are required to interface with colleagues and with patients with a view to providing a high level of customer service as it relates to health care needs. This course will provide an opportunity for learners to gain insight into the principles of communication as well as to develop skills in formal writing and presentations that would aid them to execute their duties in an empowered manner.
Professionalism NURS001This course introduces the students to the fundamentals of basic accounting concepts and procedures with emphasis on the accounting cycle of a sole proprietorship enterprise and accrual accounting for a merchandising firm. Comprehensive problems provide application and reinforcement of the complete accounting cycle, use of business documents, payroll accounting, journals and subsidiary ledgers.
Semester 2
Nursing Fundamentals (B) Needs Based Care:NURS003This course builds on the foundational knowledge gained in Nursing Fundamentals A, focusing on problem solving in the context of potential and actual problems using the nursing process as their tool. Learners will focus on the person in community, hospital and home settings. They will learn how to effectively document patient information using electronic health records and how to intervene as nursing associates to provide appropriate care and support and when to refer.
Medical Surgical Nursing NURS004This course dissects issues in the adult client as it relates to medical and surgical illnesses. It introduces learners to the structural and physiological changes occurring in the body as a result of disease processes. Learners are also exposed to the more common concepts of abnormality and will acquire a basic understanding of the sequel of diseases, alterations in body structure, alterations in body function, and the resulting clinical manifestations. The knowledge from this course, when integrated with others, will enable learners to understand why interventions are selected and how they can respond within their scope to patients’ needs.
Health Promotion FNUR004TThis course covers the principles, concepts, and strategies of health promotion, including primary health care delivery as well as the major theorists and resources in the field. It emphasizes the importance of environmental health, behavior change modification, and the role of nursing assistants in preventing illness and promoting and maintaining health in the context of diversity.
Cross Cultural Management CNUR001This course is a practical component that enables students to acquire authentic patient care experience in a clinical setting. Under the guidance of a Registered Nurse, the course provides students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and develop practical skills in a supervised environment. Lifespan Nursing Introduction to Pharmacology This course is designed to provide learners with an understanding of the basic principles of pharmacology in relation to nursing assistants. It prepares the learner to perform the role and responsibilities of applying pharmacology to nursing care within their scope.
