Associate of Arts in Media Technology and Design

Media Technology and Design is an interdisciplinary course that explores the intersection of technology, design, and media production. This course provides students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary to create innovative and compelling media content that is highly relevant in today’s dynamic and ever-evolving digital landscape. This emphasis on relevance is sure to excite prospective students about the opportunities this course presents.

Through a combination of engaging lectures, immersive hands-on workshops, and exciting projects, students will learn about the latest trends and technologies shaping the field of media production. They will develop proficiency in industry-standard software tools and gain practical experience in graphic design, video production, web development, and interactive media. This hands-on approach ensures that students feel actively engaged in their learning journey.

Admission Requirements

CSEC passes in one or all of the following subjects:

The College admission criteria for mature students are as follows:

  • Age Requirement: The individual must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Demonstrated Potential for Academic Success: The applicant’s previous school performance, private study, and/or recent work record and experiences should indicate strong potential for academic success.
  • Relevant Work Experience: The applicant should possess relevant work experience, which could contribute to their success in the chosen program of study.
  • Absence from Formal Education: The applicant should not have pursued secondary school, college, or university-level studies within the last five years. This criterion emphasises the consideration of individuals who may have been out of formal education for some time but are now seeking to pursue further studies.
  • Additional Requirements: Mature students must also fulfil any other specific requirements stipulated by the Academic Unit offering the program of study they are interested in.

These criteria aim to provide mature students with opportunities for higher education based on their potential, experiences, and readiness to undertake academic challenges, even if they have been out of formal education for a period of time.

Outline of Pathways

This Degree has four pathways (Majors): Graphic Design, Interactive Media, Animation, and Screen Production.

As part of the Technology Division curriculum, students must complete four (4) General Education core courses worth three (3) credits each. These courses cover a wide range of subjects, including Communication for Tertiary Purposes, Computer Fundamentals, Psychology, Fundamental Mathematics, Caribbean Studies and two mandatory courses, College Readiness and What Makes Us Anguillian.

 

Additionally, students must choose Two Electives (each worth 3 credits) from their chosen discipline.

Semester 1

Computer Fundamentals GED 104The course is designed to impart fundamental knowledge of computers and their practical applications. It is structured into 5 units that encompass the essentials of computer systems, hardware, software, and internet/email usage. The hands-on labs are designed to reinforce the concepts covered in lectures and give students the opportunity to practice using the mouse, navigating Windows explorer, word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and email.

Understanding Digital Media MTD 101The course “Understanding Digital Media” delves into the multifaceted world of digital communication, exploring its historical context, theoretical foundations, and contemporary implications. Through a comprehensive examination of key concepts, students gain insights into the dynamic interplay between technology, society, and communication.
College Readiness GED 101This course introduces students to basics of tertiary education in preparation for their transition from secondary school to an institution of higher learning. They are expected to complete various modules in time management, critical listening, group working and academic writing.

Communication for Tertiary Purposes GED 102This foundational communication course is designed to introduce students to the communication process, channel and associated theories. It enables them to interpret and analyse verbal and non-verbal cues to critically evaluate various forms of communication in personal, professional, and societal contexts. In addition, it will help students improve their critical thinking and academic writing skills necessary for becoming effective communicators in business organisations.

Fundamental Mathematics GED 103Fundamentals of Maths provides the mathematical foundation upon which subsequent studies in mathematics and other areas depend. Fundamentals of Mathematics is designed for the student who needs to improve or review basic maths and concepts. This course includes computation using integers, fractions, decimals, proportions and percent along with an overview of measurement, geometry and statistics.

Semester 2

Introduction to Layout and Design MTD 102The Introduction to Layout and Design Unit of Work is designed to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the fundamental principles and techniques of visual design. Throughout this unit, students will explore a range of topics related to layout and design, including typography, colour theory, composition, and the use of negative space. They will also learn how to apply these principles to create effective designs that communicate their intended message to their target audience. By the end of this unit, students will have a strong foundation in visual design and will be able to apply their knowledge and skills to a wide range of design projects.

Introduction to Digital Photography MTD 103This course is designed for students with little or no digital imaging experience to provide a fundamental understanding of digital imaging, from both a technical and conceptual point of view. Students learn to operate digital cameras, to use them as precise tools for image capture and to use digital media software (Adobe Photoshop) for graphic design media. The course is a combination of lecture, demonstration and hands-on practice.

Coding Fundamentals MTD 104This course is designed for students with a basic understanding of computer science and engineering and introduces them to intermediate-level concepts. It covers various disciplines within computer science, such as networks, AI, robotics, graphics, and computer architecture. The course provides a foundation in programming focusing on C/C++ and covers fundamental programming concepts, as well as current issues like parallelism and embedded systems through relevant programming projects. It culminates in a comprehensive programming assignment and/or a team-based robotics project. The course employs a lecture/lab format to provide hands-on experience and active learning techniques.

Introduction to Digital Business Bus 106This course introduces students to fundamental concepts and principles of the emerging field of digital business. Students will explore different aspects of digital business including e-commerce, digital marketing, digital analytics and the associated technologies. As such students will improve their digital literacy skills and be better able to digitise their businesses or better function within a rapidly changing digital workplace.

Intro to Screen Writing MTD 105The course is an Introduction to screenwriting techniques, with a focus on dramatic structure, visual language, and character development. It covers scriptwriting guidelines, character development, plot design, creating storylines for screen-based media, writing, drafting, and revising an original short screenplay. Topics include treatments, outlines, character sketches, plotting, sequencing, character analysis, formatting, structure, scene construction, plot twists, comedic slants, and dramatic tones. Students will practice individual script development through peer review and group critiques, and complete writing exercises to develop an original short film script. The course also includes a study of film language, narrative principles, formatting, script analysis, and the role of the screenwriter in the filmmaking industry.

Visual Communication: Design Principles & Digital Skills MTD 106In this course, we will explore the principles of designing effective visual communication. We will learn how the senses shape our understanding of the visual world and how to translate perceptual principles into design principles. The course will cover perception and the mechanisms used by the brain to make sense of visual information, basic graphic design, image manipulation, typography, and colour theory. The second part of the course will focus on visualizing information.

Introduction to Psychology GED 203This introductory course explores the fundamental concepts, theories, and research methods used in psychology to understand human thought, behaviour, and emotions. It will explore topics around various psychological processes, mental health, and the influence of social and biological factors on the human experience.

Semester 3
What makes us AnguillanGED 000This course will provide learners with knowledge about the unique qualities of Anguilla’s history, culture, governance, tourist attractions and leisure spots. It is a starting point for additional research and exploration into the intricacies of Anguillian life, and is targeted at persons who work in concierge or who interact with visitors on a daily basis. However, anyone with an interest in knowing more about Anguilla is encouraged to register for it.

Drawing basic:MTD 017In this course, Drawing Basic, you will learn the essential techniques and principles of drawing to help you develop your artistic skills. Whether you are a beginner or looking to improve your drawing abilities, this course will provide you with a solid foundation for creating a wide range of artworks accurately and creatively.

Story-boarding and Scriptwriting MTD 018This course focuses on advanced storytelling and film language concepts relevant to the animation storyboarding. Issues related to storytelling stylization are primary to project work completed in the course. Students will be introduced to storyboard-specific drawing techniques and processes while carrying out research and design work related to their storytelling projects.

Introduction to Typography MTD 019In the course, we will delve into the invention of printing by defining and evaluating its basic components. We will also learn to classify typefaces based on their visual similarities and describe them in detail. Additionally, we will apply the basic principles of micro-typography for setting text and identify and use typographic conventions to effectively articulate the structure of text. Furthermore, we will learn to plan page layouts and define how to organize both verbal and visual elements. Finally, we will gain practical skills in employing the appropriate software to plan and design various typographic works.

Colour and Design MTD 020In this course, students will learn about the fundamental elements and principles of design, along with basic colour theory. They will be exposed to a variety of media, such as graphite, collage, cut paper, markers, and acrylic paint, among others. The class assignments are designed to assist students in honing their design and colour skills. Given the coursework's intensity, students will need to manage their time effectively.

History of Motion PicturesMTD E23History of Motion Pictures provides an overview of film as an industry, mass medium, and art form. Students will explore the evolution of cinema, from its early days to contemporary works. Topics include film history, influential filmmakers, and the impact of cinema on society.

Semester 1

Foundations of Digital Imaging and Visualization  MTD 201Foundations of Digital Imaging and Visualization is a comprehensive course that provides students with essential knowledge and skills for understanding and creating digital images and visualizations. Through a combination of theoretical concepts and hands-on practice, students will learn about the principles of digital imaging, image editing techniques, visualization tools, and best practices for creating impactful visual content.

Creative Thinking for Media Design  MTD 202aThe course focuses on developing fundamental techniques to unlock and enhance students’ innate creative abilities. Through exploration, experimentation, and practical exercises, students will cultivate creative problem-solving skills. The course operates under the premise that creativity is a learnable skill. Regular practice is essential for building and refining creative capacities. Join us in this journey of self-discovery and innovation!

Introduction to Digital Social Media MTD 203This course aims to offer a comprehensive introduction to the broad concept of social media, its influence on both domestic and international societies, messaging structures, and the legal parameters that regulate constructive and destructive conversations according to US and international laws. Students will gain the skills to navigate and classify various social media platforms, assess their policies, and generate content.

Introduction to Digital Video and Audio MTD 204This unit introduces students to digital video and audio production strategies and practices. This unit is designed to progressively build knowledge and practical skills related to the planning, capturing, editing and publishing of digital audio and video content.

2D Motion Graphics And Visual EffectsMTD 205Motion Graphics Design” course focuses on integrating visual elements from diverse sources to create dynamic, composite graphics for film, video, and web applications. Students engage in projects such as video title sequences, animated logos, and broadcast graphics. Emphasis is placed on the synergy between graphics, typography, video, and sound. Additionally, students explore time-based applications within a spatial context.

Introduction to the film process  MTD 206This course provides students with a comprehensive introduction to the world of filmmaking. Students will learn the basic principles of filmic design, including the four foundational elements of film style, and how to effectively use camera and editing tools. By the end of the course, students will be able to visualize a basic story idea and bring it to life on the big screen.

Caribbean Studies  GED 202This course offers an interdisciplinary study of the Caribbean region, with a particular focus on its rich history, diverse cultures, and complex social realities. It aims to explore the unique challenges faced by the region's people, including political, economic, social, and environmental issues. By delving into the many facets of the Caribbean, this course aims to showcase the region's incredible diversity and passion.

Semester 2

Digital Publishing & Design  MTD 301aThe Digital Publishing course provides students with a comprehensive approach to advanced design, integrating traditional print principles with cutting-edge digital technology and innovative research. Students will enhance their grasp of form, function, and structure within various contexts and techniques. The course emphasizes the creative process through guided discussions and pertinent case studies. Additionally, students will learn practical methods for creative organization, preproduction, time management, and other industry-standard workflows.

Branding and Corporate Design  MTD 302aThis course provides an in-depth exploration of the design and production process of corporate identity systems and branding elements. It takes a systematic approach to developing a comprehensive corporate identity from concept creation to design and production. Students will gain an understanding of the importance of creating a memorable and enduring identity. They will be tasked with creating various elements such as logos, signage, fleet graphics, stationery packages, and identity manuals.

Mobile Application Development  MTD 304This module will concentrate on the design and implementation of mobile apps, providing students with a solid understanding of the current technical issues. This includes hardware and software considerations, development and implementation, and the selection of appropriate programming languages. We will stress the significance of students considering the design and development of an effective presence on mobile devices, as this is a key aspect of user-centric app development. Additionally, we will examine the delicate balance between security, the user interface, performance, and accessibility, and delve into the challenges associated with updatable data.

Introduction to content management systems  MTD 303The course “Web Technologies and Content Management Systems” provides students with a foundational understanding of the internet, web technologies, and the critical components necessary for effective web operation. Through a practical and theoretical approach, students will explore key topics related to web development, content management, and their impact on modern business practices.

Digital Game Design  MTD 401This course provides an introduction to the principles of video game design and development. Students will explore the history of the industry, investigate the theory of story, game mechanics and level progression, develop creativity skills that can be applied through an ideation process, and design and develop a 2D video game.

3D Animation Character Design  MTD 402 – 3DIn this course, students will have the opportunity to build a diverse portfolio of character art in various styles, and then translate their best designs from 2D into 3D digital models and clay sculptures. Throughout the course, students will gain insight into character design by completing weekly exercises and working on a 3D project that spans the entire duration of the course. The learning experience will involve studio projects, individual and group critiques, lectures, discussions, workshops, and readings.

Visual StorytellingMTD 403In this class, students will have the opportunity to learn the vocabulary of film language, including various types of shots, transitions, and narrative structure. Through in-class exercises and assignments, they will apply basic principles of character staging, shot progression, camera angles, lighting tones, and camera moves. Students will also create a series of hand-drawn storyboards to demonstrate their understanding of sequential narration, accurate perspective, and character placement. Additionally, they will practice using visual methods to express character attitudes.

Video Editing and Post-Production  MTD 404In this introductory course on digital video, we will cover all aspects of video production, including generating story ideas, mastering camera techniques, and capturing and editing footage. The course will involve hands-on use of digital video equipment. Additionally, students will learn to use editing software to manipulate footage and create transitions and effects. They will also gain experience using various hardware and software to capture and edit video and audio elements to produce a short video.

Semester 3

Project Portfolio  MDT 207Portfolio is a professional tool indispensable for career advancement of any designer: beginner or expert. It is required to get clients or jobs, to attend special workshops, internships and residencies. In this course, students will acquire all necessary skills necessary to create an efficient, professional and attractive portfolio. PREREQUISITES: In order to get the most of this course, students should have at least some completed projects ready to be presented in a portfolio. Big collection of academic and professional projects as well as basic graphic design skills will be a great advantage.
